Moxibustion treatment - joint pain all over the body
Some pain that seems to come from the joints actually comes from structures other than the joints, such as ligaments, tendons, or muscles (see Introduction to the Biology of the Musculoskeletal System). Examples of such lesions include bursitis and tendinitis.
True joint pain (arthralgia) may or may not be accompanied by joint inflammation (arthritis). The most common symptom of arthritis is pain. Inflammed joints may also be hot and swollen, and in rare cases, the surface skin may also be red. Arthritis may affect only the joints of the limbs, or the joints of the limbs and the axial joints (such as the spinal joints or pelvic joints). Pain may occur only when the joints are moving, or when they are at rest. Depending on the cause of the joint pain, there may be other symptoms such as rash, fever, eye pain, or mouth ulcers.
Different disorders tend to affect different numbers of joints. Thus, doctors consider different causes of pain when pain occurs in one joint (see Joint Pain: One Joint) rather than in many. Among disorders that affect many joints, some are more likely to affect the same joints on both sides of the body (for example, both knees or both hands). This is called "symmetric arthritis." Also, in some disorders, arthritis attacks are always localized to the same joint. In other disorders, arthritis moves from joint to joint (migratory arthritis).
Causes of Pain in Many Joints
In most cases, pain that originates in more than one joint is caused by arthritis. Disorders that cause arthritis differ from one another in certain characteristics, such as:
-How many joints are usually affected and which joints are usually affected
-Whether the axial skeleton (such as the spine and pelvis) is usually affected
-Whether the arthritis develops suddenly (acute) or is a long-standing problem (chronic)
-The most common causes of acute arthritis in many joints are
Viral infection
New onset of joint disease or acute exacerbation of an existing chronic joint disease (such as rheumatoid arthritis or psoriatic arthritis)
Gout or calcium pyrophosphate arthritis (formerly called pseudogout) Less common causes of acute arthritis in multiple joints include Lyme disease and gout (these diseases can also affect just one joint), gonorrhea and streptococcal infection, and reactive arthritis (arthritis that follows a digestive or urinary tract infection).
The most common causes of chronic arthritis in multiple joints are
-Inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, or systemic lupus erythematosus (in adults)
-The noninflammatory disease osteoarthritis (in adults)
-Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (in children)
Some chronic inflammatory diseases affect the joints of the spine in addition to the joints of the arms and legs (called peripheral arthritis). Some affect parts of the spine more often. For example, ankylosing spondylitis more often affects the lower spine (lumbar spine), while rheumatoid arthritis more often affects the upper spine (cervical spine).
The most common non-articular conditions that can cause pain around
joints are
-Fibromyalgia
-Polymyalgia rheumatica
-Bursitis or tendinitis
-Bursitis and tendinitis are usually caused by an injury and usually affect only one joint. However, some conditions can cause bursitis or tendinitis in more than one joint.
